A panel of international researchers and technologists from two major EU-funded projects; Agrimax and Agrocycle – and from the University of York, will provide research and development perspectives for creating value from crop and food waste as part of the EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) in Toulouse, 9-14 July 2018.

ESOF 2018

Dedicated to path-breaking scientific research and innovation, ESOF 2018 will build on the legacy of past conferences promoting dialogue on the role of science and technology in society and public policy, and bring the latest scientific innovation and discovery to a global audience.

Agrimax and Agrocycle: Let’s talk rubbish: creating value from crop and food waste.

When: Wednesday 11th July 2018 @ 8.45am – 10am

Where: Congress Venue Buildings, Toulouse, France

To ensure sustainable growth, Europe is encouraging the replacement of fossil fuel-based products with sustainable alternatives from renewable, biological sources. But how can we supply an increasing world population with food and other biobased materials from a finite area of agricultural land? Part of the solution must lie in making more from waste. In Europe alone around 90 million tonnes of food and 700 million tonnes of crop are wasted every year.

From across Europe, researchers and technologists involved in the Agrimax and Agrocycle projects are developing new ways to produce a wide range of innovative products from unavoidable agricultural, horticultural and food processing waste including functional foods, active packaging, biodegradable materials, fertilisers and biofuels.

The panel discussion titled ‘Let’s talk rubbish: creating value from crop and food waste’ will consist of short talks from partners of both EU-funded projects and from the University of York. These include: Dr Elodie Bugnicourt, IRIS, Professor Stefaan De Neve, Gent University, Dr Fionnuala Murphy, University College Dublin, Dr Carrie Bradshaw, University of York and will be facilitated by Elspeth Bartlet from BioVale. Afterwards the audience will be invited to explore the issues around value from agri-food waste with the speakers.
